In the early days of European settlement in America an extended family, the
Beds, set off to make them selves a new life out west. Details of the family
group are sketchy but it is rumoured there were at least 3 doubles and 4
singles involved. After months of trekking with their wagons they found a
suitable site with a fresh water spring. It soon became established as a
trading post on the trail.
The local creek was found to connect to a navigable river except during
very dry seasons. Soon boats were calling to deliver supplies which were
then sold to the wagon trains passing. With the coming of the railroads
every town wanted the railroad owners to put in a branch line. As this was
unsuccessful here they started their own ‘Short Line’ – hence the Bed
Springs Creek Railroad came into existence.
Apart from local passenger traffic connecting with the main line at Groenen
Creek, freight consists of rail/water interchange traffic, local supplies and
produce from the facility on the higher level. Being a small concern stock is
often hired from other lines, purchased second-hand or simply adapted from
some other source.
