This layout is closely based on the Mill Street terminus of the Wantage
Tramway Company. The period is approximately 1920, before the demise of
the passenger service. The railway buildings are all based on the prototype
structures but the gasworks, which hides the fiddle yard, is pure fiction.
The rolling stock to be seen on the layout is the builders believes
appropriate for the location and period. Some of this stock has been
scratchbuilt and while they do not claim absolute ‘rivet counter’ accuracy,
it does, they hope give the right atmosphere.
The ‘Wantage’ never had much use for either signalling or brakevans, their
practice was to hang a red lamp on the coupling hook of the last vehicle.
For the kids among you, (big or small), there are four cats lazing about on
the layout, see if you can spot them. (All four are based on prototype cats
that have owned us, and all are known by name!).
Finally, the operators may look pre-occupied, but they don’t bite and they
enjoy a chat. So if you have any questions or comments feel free to
interrupt those delicate shunting movements!
